I took this in Pompeii, it is one of the many castings of people that perished in AD 79. I had tears in my eyes when I shot this. It was a very somber sight. Some delayed flights and a little ash on the ground, we don't have it so bad.

Oh, my god-so is that an actual person encased in that?!?!?
ReplyDeleteIn 1861 the excavator working on Pompeii began making reverse castings of the hardened ash encrusted bodies. He made a hole in the figures and poured in plaster, then took off the ash crust. Kind of like how they make bronze statues these days. No tissue was there, but some had bones and artifacts inside.The castings made it possible to see the figures as they were when they died. It is truly a look into the past.
